Transformers United Drift UN-08 Review! (2011)

At long last, I finally decided to open up Transformers United Autobot Drift! Drift also marks the 1st actual TF figure I bought that is not of G1 cartoon continuity. He exists solely as a G1 IDW character. However, that wasn't what got me to buy this figure whose mold eventually led to the creation of Generations Blurr whom I retrospectively reviewed a few weeks back. I got Drift, because long story cut short, was a former Decepticon (named Deadlock) who one day went by a samurai code and abandon the ranks of the Decepticon only to find himself joining the Autobots short after. I thought this was amazing for a Decepticon to turn a new leaf and do good. Enough of that and let's get started.

Enough of the packing and now for Alt Mode!

For Transformer newbies, technically, Drift the toy came first; the Hasbro version to be exact.  I was on the fence on whether to get him or not because he wasn't G1 cartoon canon. I ended getting Blurr of course since he was in the cartoons despite his retooled IDW look. But to make matters easier, the priority in which they were released ( > means followed by): Hasbro Drift > Hasbro Blurr > United Blurr and Drift.  In car mode, you can see that it is Blurr that actually lost his spoiler (wing) and is painted blue and has black wheels whereas Drift has silver rims. Everything else is nearly identical. You can see Drift's "Samurai" character on his side doors very easily. Blurr and Drift can respectively put their weapons under their belly in this mode. Car mode is very easy to transform into. You shouldn't need to look in manual or Youtube for that matter.

Man I paid a fortune for these knives!
Never knew they were fake. Michael Bay I'll get you for this!

The one and only!

Weapons, who need em!

All in a days work.
Wow, I am impressed by this figure. Despite the weaponry and paint job, Blurr had his head re-tooled from Drift to distinguish the two. Weapons wise: Drift comes with a long rubber katana which allows you to bend the sword with ease allow customary posing whereas Blurr's rifle is just hard plastic making poses a little more tough. When needed a break, both autobots can put their weapons in a holder located in their backs (the belly in car mode). Drift also utilizes two small knives, whose handles can bend and be placed in the holsters on both side of his waists. Blurr has this same feature but his secondary weapons are two smaller guns. A unique feature is found in Drift's Katana which is engraved with Chinese/Kanji words. I asked my mom what this meant, though she knew how to read it, she wasn't too sure in how to translate the meaning in English. The best I could come up trying to understand her was something like "the one and only in this world" Online states its something more like "Peerless under Heaven." So it is almost similar because Drift is unmatched in this case, allowing him to be the only one in this world or under heaven... oh never mind... Going back to the figure, I can't believe it took me this long to open him. He turned out to be a solid figure along side his myriad of poses. He is an autobot samurai no doubt and he turned out that way in Bayformers 4 literally. I was glad to see him in TF 4 though he looks nothing like his IDW counterpart. Overall, still cool.

Like always: Hasbro version here. All I can say is that the white and red is much brighter in the United release making the Hasbro version look pre-yellowed.

Conclusion:  I'm glad to add this guy to my classics collection even though he didn't appear in the cartoons. I'm glad I didn't hesitate when the United version came out since the Hasbro version became rare by the time I wanted him. Just get this guy if you see him lying around, you won't be disappointed.

By the power of Greyskull!
